The Sun 21 crossed the Atlantic in 2008 completely with solar power. It made a 7,000 mile voyage, and has the speed record for a solar powered boat crossing the Atlantic. The Sun21 crossed from Las Palmas, Gran Canaria to Le Marin, Marinique in 29 days.

The Sun21 is one of many self powered electric boats, but as of this writing it is the only one to cross the atlantic ocean, so it holds the record! Many tour boats around the world are powered by the sun, and there is a company that builds them. This is a growing market, and the rate of growth is very high, people are ready for a power source that is unaffected by the price of oil. Sun21 has proved that ocean voyages powered by the sun are possible, that is step number 1. I'm eager to see step number 2.
