Leaving Florida on I-10, we try to cover some miles so we can eat at Prejean's in Lafayette, Louisiana. We drove straight through Alabama and Mississippi, stopping in Hammond for the night.
Tuesday we planned to get to Galveston in time for the last Mardi Gras parade, so of course we went south on 51 and took the Scenic Byway on Hwy 22 toward the Mississippi River.

We almost stopped here for some boiled crawfish.

We crossed a river whose banks were all trees standing in water.

Riverside houses in the same area.

Then we rolled into Head of Island, a very peaceful town on the Amite River. The road followed the river, and most houses were on the banks.

We crossed the river back and forth several times.

At St. Gabriel we stopped to watch a tug push a raft of barges up the Mississippi. I counted 21 barges pushed by this tug.

We wanted to cross the Mississippi on this ferry to Plaquemine, but we just missed it. To get on to Galveston, we followed the river road to Baton Rouge.

Back on I-12, we cross the Mississippi and head west from Baton Rouge.

Once in Texas we head south to the Bolivar Peninsula on the Gulf of Mexico, and head south toward the ferry to Galveston.

We were the last car on the Robert H. Dedmon. Observation deck has indoor and outdoor viewing and restrooms. This is the entrance to the Houston Ship Channel and many ships were going in and out.

We stopped at friends house to pick them up and went to the Mardi Gras parade downtown Galveston.
