The S / V ONDEAN was designed by L. Francis Herreshoff and built by Jon Robert Sutcliff of Pompano Beach, FL. At his day job, Mr. Sutcliff worked at Merritt Boat Works, also located in Pompano Beach, crafting some of the most beautiful sportfishing yachts in the world. In his off hours, Mr. Sutcliff and two helpers built ONDEAN. The name derived from his two young sons, Jon and Dean. The build started in 1972. The keel was laid in Fort Lauderdale, FL. This master builder used only the finest materials and the best construction methods available to build his boat. The hull is strip constructed of juniper cedar using epoxy and monel fasteners on mahogany frames. The keel is 12,000 pound cast lead for ballast and hull support. Decks, coach cabin, cock pit and interior is marine ply. The exterior hull, decks, cabin and hatches are covered with glass cloth and epoxy. The bulwarks, combing, trim, interior , and trim, doors, drawer fronts are mahogany. The tiller is ash, the bow sprit is cedar, and the spars are clear fir. Most fittings, hardware and ports are bronze. Stainless standing with bronze turn buckles and chain plates. She was launched in 1975. The 37hp Westerbeke auxiliary is fresh water cooled and runs like new. ONDEAN is a timeless beauty and one of the prettiest boats on the water. She was docked at Mr. Sutcliff 's home and was well taken care of by her loving owner over these 31+ years. I took ownership in 2006 when my wife and I sailed her throughout the FL Keys for six months. We are home now where I have been sanding and applying DuPont EMRON to every part and surface until I am finally finished.
