1964 Pearson Vanguard 33

  • We bought the boat from a young man in St. Petersburg who was doing a thorough renovation but just ran out of steam it seems. I have continued on with some interior projects such as a new galley counter, mounting the Force 10 propane stove, and a new dinette that drops down for a wide berth. Vanguards are known for being in the early wave of fiberglass construction, a time when the builders threw in extra laminates "just to be sure" thus it is often termed "bulletproof". It was marketed as a "cruiser-racer" and was designed along the lines of the early CCA racing rules of the day thus has long overhangs meant to cheat a bit so that the official 22' waterline actually lengthens out to 26' once heeled over. This contributes to some beautiful lines overall. It has 4.5' draft with a cutaway forefoot and rudder attached to the aft edge of the keel and is tiller steered. Beam is 9'-3" and is quite sleek. The house seems a bit high but contributes to the volumous 6'-4" of headroom in the main cabin. The hull paint is almost new and a brilliant royal blue. The topsides need painting. We bought the boat for it's structural integrity and the cherry 18 hp Universal diesel. The motor took me across the gulf from Tarpon Springs to Apalachicola in 38 hours of trouble free purring and has run like a champ since. The VG is at a fine stage for the new owner to concentrate on the small details needed now to bring it back to its former glory as I've laid in the last basic infrastructure items. VGs have gone around the world engineless and are known to be seaworthy yet seakindly. It comes with a full suit of sails (including spinnaker), the new stainless steel wire rigging, the boom, but no mast. I was going to rig it with chinese lug sails. The hull is sound and recently barrier coated. We're asking $8K but might come down a LITTLE. It's not like buying a eggshell Hunter: it's a tough, able boat.
