1969 Albacore 15, #3187
The Albacore Class was designed by Uffa Fox. It is based on his International 14 Class hull from the late 1950s. It was expanded and lengthened by 1 foot and established with tight class rules for one-design class racing.
There are many fleets in the US, Canada and the UK. A strong fleet exists
near Washington, DC on the Potomac. Toronto, Canada holds many regattas
for Albacores which attract Albacores from many countries.
The Sarasota Sailing Squadron hosts the Albacore Mid-Winter Championship
Regatta in late March each year. There are frequently as many as twenty
Albacores at this regatta. Prior to this, a number of Canadian Albacore
sailors come to Sarasota for practice session as a group.
The Albacore is a great boat for racing and teaching. Lots of interior space and a stable hull shape, yet light enough to plane in a moderate breeze. It is not overly technical. It is also very popular for recreational use. It can easily and safely handle 4 young people.
