At our short layover in Chicago I saw duty free cigarettes for less than $20 a carton, little did I know what a mistake I made by not buying a couple of cartons to take with me! When I ran low in England and stopped in a convenience store (run by an Indian of course), I found the cigs were all around 5 POUNDS (OVER $10) PER PACK! Even in a large supermarket, cigs were about $100 per carton. I usually paid about £5.29 per pack, when I found a machine in a pub in Battle for only £5 it only had 14 cigarettes in the pack. In England you can buy packs of 10, 14, 16 or 20. The warning labels, some of which you can see on the left, are a bit more dramatic than in the US and much more prominent, being on both front and back of the packs instead of in small print on the side. Conclusion: When flying to England from the states, buy the limit of your friends favorite brand at the duty free shop before you leave. They are NOT cheap in the duty free shop at Heathrow! If none of your English friends smoke, buy some anyway and give them away when you go to a pub. Then you will have English friends who smoke!
