We drove the few miles southwest of the entrance on West Line Road to the boat ramp on East Galveston Bay. Nice little ramp on a narrow cove that opens onto the Bay. Driving back we spotted a Great Blue Heron flying with a snake. We stopped and watched for 15 minutes until he swallowed the snake, then either the snake got back out or the heron caught another one and flew away with it.
Coming back to the entrance we took the short east to the boat canal ramp. Boating on the refuge is allowed only in the boat canal, suitable for small shallow draft vessels. Airboats and personal watercraft are not allowed.
