The Birch Creek Unit of the Lake Somerville State Park was the park I liked the best on Lake Somerville. Lot's of trees and campsites and 22 miles of hiking trails make this park very nice. It even has a special campground for people with horses! This first video is the drive from the entrance to the east end of the park and the Yapon camping area, campsites 1 through 30.

After Yapon we came west a bit to the day use area and boat ramp. A good two lane ramp with docks on both sides, but the lake was down a bit and the docks are fixed so they were a little high and not very deep. There is also a nice fishing dock to the left of the ramps. This video is a look at the Lake Somerville State Park boat ramps in the Birch Creek unit. I refered to the ramp at Big Creek park that was too shallow as the Birch Creek park, oops.

After the boat ramp we continued around the day use area, and Cedar Elm camping area with campsites 104 to 119. Two pavilions and many picnic tables down by the beach, then the walk in camping area also close to the beach.

A bit further to the east is Post Oak camping area, with sites 31 through 60. A few of the sites are close to the water.
No video of Post Oak
Almost back to the park entrance, we took a look at the group trailer area which has 14 sites. Looks like it was designed for a family reunion where everyone has RV's.

This last video the Birch Creek Unit of Lake Somerville State Park is the Old Hickory Camping Area, sites 61 to 103. The horse camping area, sites 120 to 129, is nearby with the beginning of the 13 mile trail to the Nails Creek unit of the state park. Phone 979 535 7763 for reservations and information.

And here's a couple of pictures from the hiking trail loop at the north end of Birch Creek. It was a nice walk, with wildflowers, birds and butterflies.
