This Buccaneer 285 coastal cruiser is structurally and mechanically very sound, but it could be fairly characterized as a "project boat" with great potential. The exterior hull, rigging and Volvo diesel engine are rock solid, but the cabin interior needs extensive refurbishment: new headliner, cabin sole and upholstery. The interior woodwork is in good condition.

The hull bottom needs new anti-fouling paint and the topsides need a few scratches, and one gouge, to be repaired and repainted. The mainsail is baggy, but could be quite serviceable after a cleaning and resew. This boat has spent about half of its life just sitting on its heavy duty trailer here in Colorado.

Like most of the Buccaneer series, the 285 center cockpit model was built as an easy-to-sail family cruiser, with an emphasis on maximizing the interior space, yet retaining an 8 ft. beam for trailering on highways without requiring a special permit. The long shallow draft fixed keel permits easy ramp launching for a boat this size, and the 2.25 ft. draft makes the 285 a very good boat for coastal cruising in shallow Gulf and East Coast waters.

This is a great, inexpensive, trailerable boat for coastal and offshore cruising, and for living aboard. There is over 6 ft. of headroom in the galley. It has an enclosed head with a shower. The aft stateroom has a double berth. This boat could be brought back to excellent condition for a relatively modest outlay of money, time and effort.

The tandem axle trailer is in very good condition. It has electric brakes and like-new tires. Further information and photos on request.
