1977 Chrysler Buccaneer

  • This is an excellent example of the popular one design. I acquired it in 2005 and have made improvements in function and appearance. The main and jib are original and in good shape. The jib is rigged on the original roller furling for ease of handling. There is also a spinnaker with hardware which I've never rigged. Worn lines have been replaced.

The deck and cockpit are solid and of good appearance. The centerboard trunk, centerboard and rudder are solid. The hull is in good condition with some chalking of the red gelcoat and some old scratches. Although the cockpit self bailers are of the original style, I fabricated new valves with O rings to improve sealing when closed. This old style of bailer; however, weeps water when closed precluding long term in the water storage. I return the boat to the trailer each evening. The biggest improvement is the new teak raised mast step with hinge and teak mast partner. This arrangement allows one person to easily raise the mast with confidence. I have singlehanded this boat on a regular basis on breezy days using only the main or jib alone. Double handing is more fun with all sail on and crew weight for ballast. With the proper skill, off the wind, this boat will plane! A small folding anchor is included for lunch stops on the sand bar. The original full flotation foam is in place.

Repair/replacement parts were purchased from Nichols Boat Works and from Harry Sindle including an autographed copy of his 100 page rigging and handling guide. A new premium Sailors Taylor custom cover protects the boat in both the mast up or down configuration and includes optional jib cover.

    More pictures are available.

The trailer is redone with new paint, wiring, elevated lighting, loading guides, bunk carpet, tiedown, wheel bearings, Bearing Buddies, tubes in tires, and a new spare tire. This boat may be easily towed and launched by today's smaller automobiles.
