Ballast 1,175 lbs lead (fixed fin keel)
Manufacturer's comments on the Cal 24 for 1984 Sail Magazine
Though the Cal 24 is trailerable she has the feel of a blue water yacht. She's 3,300 pounds with a 20 foot waterline on an eight foot beam. Eleven hundred seventy five pounds of external lead ballast powered by 260 square feet of sail offer the feel of big boat performance. Other big boat construction features include three keel floors for tremendous keel support and hull strength, pan interior construction for exceptional hull rigidity, and balsa cored decks for strength and light weight.
The Cockpit on the 24 is a big seven feet two inches and designed with angled coamings and faceted edges for comfortable seating. Other features include two speed recessed genoa winches and two big lockers for gear, sails and gas tank.
Below, the 24 is well appointed for family crusing (I say weekends). There are four big berths and a head in a private compartment. Sliding galley includes sink and alcohol stove with a 15 gallon freshwater tank.
Price includes: 1994 Nissan 2 stroke longshaft outboard and 3 gal. fuel tank, main sail and cover , one genoa, one #2 jib, battery and charger, 4 life jackets, anchor and rode, porta pottie, new depth/fish finder, new CD stereo, ice chest/companionway step, windex.
Condition: The boat is in overall good condition; some of the lines are less than a year old and the others are in good condition, the main and #2 are original and are in good to fair condition, they work just fine! The genoa is much newer and in great shape. The cushions are in need of attention, some of them have tears. The interior is clean overall. The bilge is clean. The deck, hull, bottom and keel are solid! Two years ago a bottom job was performed, we repaired some blisters, there are a few blisters now - nothing major. The antifouling is still working - no slime! The deck has some repairs that were made from age cracks in the gelcoat and the cockpit floor is solid, however it has been repaired from gelcoat crazing. The bomar deck hatch, top-forward if missing one hinge - I'm waiting to hear from Bomar on the replacement hinge. The rudder and tiller are in excellent shape! The compass works and is in need of a cover, the knot and depth are not operational, however the new depth/fishfinder is! There are four winches all together, two on the cabin top with halyards run aft. There is some water stains on the wood in the v-berth due to the hatch not fully locking down - not rotten wood though! The mast is straight and in very good condition. The standing rigging passes visual inspection and has carried me through winds exceeding 35 mph just fine! As a matter of fact one of our recent regattas, a storm blew in and we were the only boat to finish with both sails still flying! I really have mixed feelings about selling the 24, you'll know what I'm talking about the first time you sail her! Though she does need some work, you can take her sailing right NOW!
