1970 Columbia 26
Located on the water in beautiful, cruiser-friendly Stuart, Florida, north of Palm Beach. This Bill Tripp design, fin-keel classic has had many structural modifications for ocean sailing:
In 2003, she was hauled in Virginia.
Her keelbolts were replaced.
Her old primary thru-hull valve was replaced with a new bronze seacock.
Her keel was sandblasted to bare metal and primed with Interlux primer.
Her bottom was sanded to the gelcoat and primed with Interlux Epoxy Barrier Coat.
Her plywood deck core was replaced with new marine plywood, and the entire deck rebuilt to over 3/4' thickness.
New glassed-PVC toerails were built, with cedar trim.
Cedar rubrails were constructed.
Old plexiglass portlights were removed, and the holes glassed in and reinforced. Vintage bronze opening ports were installed.
New head and holding tank installed.
A new Honda 9.9 four stroke long shaft outboard with electric tilt and start was installed on heavy duty bracket on transom.
Oversized stainless steel chainplates were installed on hull-sides. Double lower shrouds were installed. Rigging was replaced with oversize 1/4' 7X7 galvanized wire, and traditional white oak deadeyes.
Masthead lights and VHF antenna were wired.
Traditional, sturdy white oak samson posts installed forward and secured into forward structural bulkhead.
Bilge pump installed.
Some interior, wiring and plumbing improvements were begun.
Summer, 2004 she was launched. Cruised to Philadelphia and New York City. Fall 2006, she came down the ICW to Miami. This boat is one of a kind.
Her dead-eye rigging makes her very unusual. Galvanized wire does require periodic maintenance but can be done by anyone willing to learn. Her deck, cockpit and bottom are in need of new paint. There are a few wiring and plumbing projects that are only partially completed. Both sails have operable tears in them that need attention. Some deck hardware could use attention. The port cockpit locker door hinge needs serious attention. The boat does need much cosmetic work to get it looking pretty again, but structurally there have been some major improvements. She has been sailed hard and lived aboard in rough circumstances, and she has proven herself seaworthy for days at a time offshore in foul weather. She's easy to sail and now has 8 stereo speakers in her bulkheads!
The motor has been well maintained and works great. With the bracket it cost $3200 new in 2003. I have lived and cruised aboard the boat for much of the last four years. She will be anchored in Stuart from January 3rd-18th, before, during and after the nearby Stuart boat show. I must sell her to the best offer during this time as I am moving back to California. I will be happy to show her to anyone interested.
