1885 Friendship 50
The Freda is a gaff-rigged friendship custom sloop built in 1885 in Belvedere, CA, of Douglas fir and Port Orford cedar. She is 50' overall and 35' on deck and weighs 12 l/2 tons. She has a new Yanmar 3 cylinder engine (with 20 hours). Also new is deck and cabin. However, she is need of work on her hull.*
She is the oldest continually sailed pleasure yacht on the west coast, perhaps the country. The current owner has put together the proper papers to have the Freda declared a state historical vessel. This 'heritage' vessel requires special characteristics for ownership. Consequently, only people with a sincere interest in a classical restoration, who have documented shipwright experience, have the proper resources or are willing to use only very skilled labor will be considered for ownership. The current owner will sell the Freda for the best offer (starting at asking price of $25,000).
We will reply to only serious offers with the above stipulations. If you wish to read more about Freda, see the June and July issue of Latitude 38 (latitude38.com)* or the May/June 2002 issue of Wooden Boat magazine (woodenboat.com).
