1975 Hallberg-Rassy "Monsun" 31
"Flicka" was purchased by me last summer from her first owner, with the intent of a sabbatical cruise to Latin America. I had planned to have her hauled there for a cosmetic update. My cruising plan has been derailed by problems unrelated to Flicka, and I am reluctantly selling. She is an interesting yacht whose knowledgeable first owner put a great deal of thought over 30 years into perfecting her for single-handed offshore sailing. Everything about this boat --- from her solid wood interior and glass opening ports, to her oversized deck hardware and nicely finished-out cockpit lockers --- bespeaks the high standards of her Swedish builder. Unlike many 30-foot production boats, Flicka is truly a little yacht.
Equipment includes:
GPS chartplotter
Furuno radar
Icom SSB & VHF
12v refrigeration
Navik wind vane
Autohelm ST5000 autopilot
Combi radar detector
four anchors
windlass
rowing dinghy
a very complete inventory of cruising gear including charts, spares and manuals.
Mechanically and structurally, Flicka is in good shape for her age. The bulletproof Volvo diesel has 300 hours on a top-end overhaul --- it runs strong while just sipping fuel. The sails and rigging are in very good condition. At present she needs a lot more sweat than equity: a bottom job, a fresh coat of Cetol on the caprail, minor topsides scratches repaired and a good buff & wax, thorough cleaning and some interior varnishing. I would also update interior fabrics and headliner if keeping the boat for a while.
If Flicka has a shortcoming, it is her headroom, which is about 5'11" in the salon, a little less in the head and forepeak. I expect her next owner will be someone of average or shorter stature, who's looking for a great sailing boat with globe-girdling potential.
