Designer: Ron Holder
This is a Holder 12 sailboat. Of all the board
boats I have owned, this one is my favorite. It has
a huge cockpit, big enough to fit 2 adults and 2 kids if you all
like each other. The cockpit is self draining, and I have
taken it out into big water with heavy seas. The waves would break
over the bow, and wash right out the stern. I sailed
this boat to last year's Palacios TX Beach Raid , cut the bottom out
of a tent, and anchored off & slept in the cockpit of
the boat. Also has a set of oarlocks so sometimes I would leave the
sail rig at home and bring a beach umbrella, my
kids would sit up near the daggerboard slot in the shade while I row
them around. Also used it for fishing -- it is very
effecient to row around, and so stable that I can use my 7' cast net
from the cockpit.
The biggest feature this boat has over all the rest is that the
cockpit is very comfortable to lounge around in on light air
days, the edges are gently rolled so you can sit in the middle and
lean back in comfort. When the wind picks up, you can
sit on the side and hike out. On a sunfish or other typical board
boat, you can only sit upright on the side deck, and after
8 hours on the water it really starts to ache at your back. I
installed deckplates on the sides so I could fill them up with
foam, so it is unsinkable even if you hit a stump and hole the boat.
Deckplates in the forward bulkhead make the bow
cavity a great place to store water bottles, gear, and I carried a
take apart set of 7' oars.
I made a 5'6" opening gate on my side yard, and it was so nice to
have the boat right there, ready to go at a moment's
notice, instead of down at a storage lot, or taking up valuable
space in my garage. Having a boat ready to go like that is
the secret to going sailing often, when you have a spare hour or
two, and the weather is right, you just wheel it out and
hookup to your car. Moments after arriving at the lake you are off
sailing.
Included in this auction is the boat, poly sail, rudder,
daggerboard, tarp support (wooden thing that holds up tarp), and
the canvas tarp. The trailer is NOT included, it is a brand new
galvanized trailer, only 4 months old. If you want the
trailer, you can have it for $390 extra. Regardless of whether you
buy the trailer or not, you can have the one bunk board
off my trailer that I cut a custom curve into, it matches the bottom
of the boat hull perfectly and cradles it very well.
