1983 Macgregor 25

  • If you're looking for a used boat that has been completely rebuilt, refit, re-painted and customized for comfort, beauty and great sail handling... a boat that you can throw your gear aboard and go sailing without putting the slightest prep work into, look no further! You've just found a creampuff! Much better than a NEW MacGregor at one third the price, this is a boat you can be proud to invite the classiest guests aboard for cocktails and a black-tie gourmet dinner - not to mention a great sailing experience.

This is without question, the most beautiful MacGregor 25 you'll ever see. With its custom hunter green exterior trim, matching green canvas mainsail and lifeline covers, light green corduroy cockpit cushions, and new smoke black windows it doesn't even look like a MacGregor sailboat on the outside.

Stepping down into the cabin is like walking into a much more expensive Beneteau or Island Packet yacht. The cheap original plastic galley and port settee has been replaced with a beautiful custom teak galley with flip-up chart table, built-in cooler, drawers, cabinetry and roomy pantry... unbelievable. The attractive stainless steel sink with freshwater tap drains to a thru-hull. A two-burner propane stove in the galley flips over for more counter space when not in use. There's a new modern dining table, plush new cushion covers and beautiful new durable carpets throughout. A custom mesh-bag hanging storage system for sails and gear has been installed in the V-berth and head.

The pop-top has a vinyl cover with plastic windows in excellent condition. If you release the boom vang you can even sail with this and the custom-made cockpit shade cover deployed.

A twelve-breaker electrical panel controls six cabin lights, VHF radio, depth and speed instruments, lighted compass, running lights, mast-mounted anchor and deck lights, and a pre-wired circuit for an auto-tiller.

Extensively modified for both performance sailing and comfortable coastal cruising, this boat has been refit with an "IdaSailor" high performance rudder, a "Catalina 25" style traveler for the main sheeting on the stern pulpit and an extra head stay for multiple head sail mounting. It comes with an almost new main sail (three years old) with two reef points, and three head sails - a 150 genoa, a stock 100 jib and a storm jib. The jib halyard is routed back to the cockpit along with a down haul for easy dousing in high winds. A boom vang and cam cleats for the jib sheets are mounted on deck. New slick VC-17 teflon bottom paint was applied in 2004.

A bow-mounted danforth anchor with 10 feet of chain and 75 feet of rode lets you anchor safely in any cove. Safety equipment includes an oar, life jackets, fire extinguisher, an air horn and a stainless steel boarding ladder mounted on the transom.

This creampuff includes a great running, newer model 8 hp Nissan two-stroke outboard with electric start and an on-board generator that charges the 12 volt battery whenever you are motoring.

The freshly painted trailer is in excellent condition, has fully functional running, signal and stop lights, a good sturdy winch, a new set of tires and is ready to tow the boat anywhere in the Americas.

If you aren't already familiar with the MacGregor 25, it's one of the easiest trailerable sailboats of this size to launch, retrieve and tow long distances. I've taken this boat to Mexico and crossed the Sea of Cortez from San Carlos to Bahia Concepcion and back (a beautiful trip). I've lived on her for two weeks or more many times. She has provided the best Mexico winter vacations and New Mexico sailing summers of my life. As hard as it is to part with her, it's time for someone else to enjoy her... I have contracted the incurable "bigger boat" disease and will be moving to Mexico soon.

    Happy New Year!
