The Merit 25 seems mostly to be compared to the J/24 but claims to be better in many respects. She surfaced in the early 80's when the J/24 was gaining popularity & the prototype had just won the MORC Internationals. The M-24 is a bit longer for added speed potential & only 8 feet at the beam for trailering without need for a permit. The transom is reverse for looks & the rudder inboard for efficiency. The cockpit is more comfortable with backrests & coamings. Below she's functional & the V-berth is over-sized. The mainsail is identical, but the 15/16" rig provides a fore-triangle that is 2' taller. These boats are considered to be good all-purpose vessels with a strong one-design organization behind it & have an exceptionally good record for safety in the ocean. PHRF: 171. MORC: 180.6
