1946 Emmons Snipe Class #8047 with Sterling Trailer
This boat was built by Emmons Bros. in Brewerton, NY. The hull is planked
Western Red Cedar and is in excellent condition. I am the fourth know
owner. I restored this boat in 1985-87. It has not been used much since
1989 when I purchased a CAL 27. It has always been in dry indoor storage
since I restored it, and is in excellent condition.
Length overall 15'6"
Length on waterline 13'6"
Beam 5'
Draft board up 6" board down 3'3"
Sail area 128 sq. ft.
I did the following work on the boat:
The old decking was removed.
All the deck ribs were replaced with Sitka Spruce taking care not to change
the hull shape.
The cockpit area was redesigned to improve the ability to hike out.
The top edge of the hull was rotted in places where a rub rail had been. All
the bad wood was ground out and replaced with West Epoxy and Microballoons.
The decking was replaced with marine mahogany plywood.
The floor boards were replaced with new Sitka Spruce.
All new wood was encapsulated with West Epoxy and all joints were glued
using Colloidal Silica. The only exception is the upper surface of the
decking, which is stained and varnished.
The hull exterior was stripped, and faired using West Epoxy and
Microballoons.
All the old caulk was removed and replaced with new string and Travaco Labs
Caulk-Tex Epoxy Caulk.
The hull was refinished with Interlux Polythane primer and Interthane Plus
Super Gloss Medium Blue.
The mast and boom were striped and revarnished. I also have a spare mast
and boom, which are in good condition but are not striped and varnished.
I did not refinish or varnish the inside of the hull. This has been treated
with Pettit Cuprocure Green a number of times. I believe it is better to
let the hull breath from one side.
I replaced the shrouds, forestay and running rigging.
I designed a simple system to carry the mast on the boat when trailering.
The trailer bearing and seals were replaced and the rest of the trailer is
in good condition. The lights all worked the last time I used it but I cannot guarantee them.
There are three sets of sails. Two were relatively new when I acquired them
from a friend who was racing a Snipe. The third set is older. The boat is
equipped with a McLaughlin rudder and a homemade tiller, which I made for
temporary use. I have the original mahogany rudder and ash tiller but they
need some work and fresh varnish. I changed some of the blocks to Harken
but retained the original Mainsheet cleat. I also have a small 2HP Mighty
Mite outboard that came with the boat. It is not as reliable as a modern
engine but it is very lightweight. The motor mount can be easily removed.
I have a number of digital photos, which I can send to anyone interested in this boat.
John Rose who is active in the Snipe club and he believes the boat was actually built in 1949 or 1950. He may be correct in that the original Certificate of Measurement is dated 5-24-52.
David,
I sold the Snipe. Please mark the ad accordingly. The man who bought the boat did not originally see the ad on Sailingtexas but I referred him to the website so he could read the description and see the pictures. I know this helped sell the boat. It sold for the full asking price. I also had a number of other inquires and they all came from your site. Thank you for a great site and your assistance in sell the boat. I am sending a check for $20.00 to help defray some of your costs.
Thanks again,
John
