Ballast: 450 lbs
The Tangerine was sold as a pocket cruiser by the Tangerine Sailboat
Company in the late '70's, and was later purchased by the Renken
motorboat company to be sold as the Renken 18. This example has been
modified extensively, and includes a mid-boom traveller and proper headsail
tracks. The previous owner had completely refinished the hull and deck,
using Interlux finishes. He also manufactured custom oak rub-rails and
refinished the brightwork. The cuddy cabin has original vinyl-covered
cushions in good shape, and can sleep two reasonably in camping comfort
(the claimed "four" would have to be very intimate!).
The boat is light but very stable, with 450 lbs. of ballast. It is a
fractional rig with no rear stay. The shrouds are set aft, on very stout
chainplates. The mast is easily raised manually, with no jig required
(I'm about 5'11", 180 lbs, and have no problem). It comes with a
mainsail and a 100% (possibly 110%?) jib, both of which are in good
shape,as well as a (homemade?) storm jib. All halyards and sheets have
been replaced with double-braid polyester. I purchased a new Danforth
anchor for the boat, along with 150' of 1/2" nylon rode and chain. There
is a removeable swim ladder that fastens to the stern.
The trailer is light, in great shape, and works very well with the boat.
Launching is easy. Tires are very good (one is brand new).
The outboard I've been using, which is included in the price, is a 1956
Evinrude "Lightwin" 3 hp, which runs well, moves the boat just fine, but
is finicky to start. The built-in gas tank is a definite plus.
Hi, David
Just wanted to let you know that I sold the Tangerine. Your site hooked me up with a buyer just 45 minutes away, and he pretty much knew what he was getting before he even saw it in person. Thanks very much for your service. I'd love to bring my family down to you for lessons, if I can talk them into it!
Sincerely,
Malcolm
