1979 Tayana Mariner 40
This vessel is designed to provide maximum comfort and seaworthiness for long passages. An excellent design for off-shore sailing and blue-water cruising, this ketch rig is coupled with a heavy underbody of full keel and integrated rudder to keep the boat on a steady course. The 1979 Mariner 40 was built in the Tayana yard in Taiwan in 1978 after the M36 and M40 molds were acquired from Far East Yachts, originally in Japan and later the Clair Oberly yard in California. This classic design was derived from some of the same builders who were constructing the Herreshoff, Sparkman & Stevens, Fuji, and Alden Yachts from that region. The Mariner Ketches have withstood the test of time and have provided their owners with a safe and stable sailing platform to transport themselves all over the globe. "Sea Trek" has had the same owners for the past 15 years - a sailing couple who has cruised the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, with many trips traversing the East coast of the US, the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Mexico, Central America, and the Dominican Republic and Cuba. Being a professional yachtsman and yacht service technician, as well as regular writing contributor to Soundings and other publications documenting these travels, the owners have maintained the boat in pristine condition with consistent and pertinent upgrades throughout the life of their ownership. The value of the vessel has also been protected and documented by a regular and routine history of surveys. This not only details the overall vessel history but also tracks the superb quality of maintenance and equipment installed. When first boarding the boat, one notices that the cockpit and deck are clearly designed and equipped for going someplace - seaworthy and capable of serious travels. The hard-shell cockpit cover and solid framed windshield and dodger can safely protect the occupants, helmsman, and crew during rough weather or heavy seas - yet could be completely eliminated for the boater who has other plans. Again, the superb seamanship of the owners is on display with the layout and organization throughout "Sea Trek" extensive electronics including a below-decks auto-pilot; broad inventory of sails with fully battened main and mizzen sails as well as graded jibs to match the conditions; lazy jacks and mast steps for both main and mizzen; motion detector alarms; and, a complement of 3 types and sizes of ground tackle with various rode lengths for proper and appropriate deployment regardless of the anchoring situation or conditions. As an example of the continued attention to this vessel, fresh bottom paint applied in April, 2007, and new electric windlass installed in July, 2007, are just a few of the ongoing enhancements to preserve and improve the value of the boat. Several pages of equipment and the most recent survey can be shared with the serious buyer. However, the best assessment can be derived from a visit aboard.
