E-mail me for all the pictures I have or with any questions. Have no pictures of my boy and I sailing as we borrowed the camera from my nephew. For pictures "all up", under sail and a complete description see www.teamvanguard.com (Under "choose a model", click the link for Vector).
This boat was originally sold in Wisconsin and all sailing has been in fresh water. I bought it from a young man in Minneapolis who was going to repair and sail with his four year old son, since "uncle" has a sailboat they opted for a fishing boat instead. A surveyor told him all that was needed to be seaworthy was transom repair. The mid-west area Vanguard rep told me he heard the prior owner had a "bad experience" on Lake Michigan and had to be towed in. In any case my Father and I repaired the transom with a .039 stainless steel backing plate, West Systems epoxy, 3M 5200 sealant and the original 10-32 hardware (to re-attach the rudder gudgeons) hence the 3" diameter cap at the rear of cockpit in pictures, to access backing nuts within the hull. We repaired the starboard gunwale where it apparently was rubbing against shore or a towboat. If I were keeping the boat I would fair the bottom (although its very close now) and apply gel-coat (hull color English Gray) to scratches above waterline (see pictures of starboard side above waterline and also in bow area). My Father thinks why bother and Vanguard rep told me she's in as good or better condition than most her age, but that’s just me. I've had as much pleasure going through this boat and building the trailer as sailing her. She has double trapeze and on the wire adjustable downhaul and Cunningham as well as jib and Main sheet control. There are two tiller extensions attached to the tiller and this boat was missing one, replacement RWO was $58 so I made one with a Ronstan universal joint and aircraft aluminum tubing. It needs to be anodized and grip installed. The tip of the rudder and centerboard were damaged and both could use a final application of epoxy or gel-coat to be perfect.
This boat is a hoot to sail and much to my oldest sons' dismay (he raced Lasers w/ROTC) I'm selling it to get something bigger so Momma and a guest could come along. This is a one (to 10 m.p.h.) or two man boat. Even though my son begs me, I haven't taken the spinnaker out of the bag because I know we'd be "hooked", this boat will plane while double trapped upwind!
We will haul 250 miles or so free, beyond is negotiable.
David,
Another satisfied seller! Your web-site, your links and primarily all your insight were indispensable! The Vector has a very limited market and without your help I’m sure I would have been looking at it sitting in my Garage for a long time.
With sincerest gratitude,
John
